Synaptics introduces slim slide fingerprint sensor

Synaptics Inc. announced an all new implementation of fingerprint ID technology for mobile devices with the addition of the VFS6170 slide sensor, which is a part of the company’s line of Natural ID products.

Synaptics VFS6170 is a slim biometric slide sensor for the side of a smartphone or tablet that enables single handed authentication, and further widens the company’s portfolio of fingerprint ID technologies for OEMs to integrate an ultra-slim slide sensor on the side of a device.

The sensor provides consumers with a simplified authentication method, enabling them to access their devices securely with a single handed thumb-swipe gesture.

The slim slide fingerprint sensor is designed to accelerate adoption in entry to mid-range devices by eliminating the need for a front glass cutout for the biometrics sensor, maintaining the sleek-front industrial design and lowering total solution cost.

Key features of Synaptics VFS6170 include an ultra-slim design (2.8mm thin) to fit into narrow spaces such as the edge of a device; being able to be incorporated into the side, volume rocker button for seamless integration and fewer, or no, cutouts to the front glass; one-handed operation of the side-mounted fingerprint sensor for an improved user experience; and a lower system cost.

“At Synaptics, striving for the ultimate user experience is at the core of what we do, driving us to develop the most innovative human interface solutions on the market today,” said Ritu Favre, senior vice president and general manager of Synaptics’ biometrics products division. “As the adoption rate for fingerprint ID technology continues to increase and expand across broader markets, our slim slide sensor solution demonstrates our ability to broaden our product line and address the growing needs of our OEM partners.”

Synaptics recently signed a license agreement to integrate Precise Biometrics fingerprint algorithm into its touch fingerprint sensors and solutions.
