Biometrics and healthcare, rapid DNA, fingerprint authentication for mobile banking & more top stories

Here is a recap of the most popular biometrics industry news that appeared on BiometricUpdate.com this past week.

Biometric healthcare management system

One of the week’s biggest stories came from GenKey, which announced that it will provide its biometric healthcare management system to the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) of Kenya.

Rapid DNA platform

IntegenX has introduced the RapidHIT ID System, a DNA identification solution that quickly and seamlessly generates forensic DNA profiles within 90 minutes.

Behavioral biometrics

And in a guest post, NuData Security director of customer success Ryan Wilk discussed the line between biometric methods used to secure physical spaces and persons, and biometric methods that can be used for online security.

Law enforcement

Law enforcement has certainly become one of the leading applications of biometrics, with The Baltimore police force will purchase five portable fingerprint devices to help crime scene technicians to better solve criminal cases.

The Department of Homeland Security has outlined its vision for how its biometric-based programs will help improve the agency’s operational efficiency over the next decade.

On the other side of the globe, the Australian government is expected to roll out a new facial recognition solution next year that will allow law enforcement agencies to share facial images amongst themselves.

Financial sector

Another area that continues to gain ground in biometrics applications is the financial sector. EyeVerify announced it is now providing Eyeprint ID authentication technology for First Internet Bank to use in its personal mobile banking application.

In a press conference held in Toronto Tuesday morning, insurance firm Manulife announced that it has deployed Nuance’s natural language understanding (NLU) and voice biometric technologies to improve the insurer’s contact center customer experience.

And finally, BioCatch has been selected to present on stage at the Visa Europe Innovation Exchange, a one day conference to connect European corporate executives with Israeli startups.

Border control

With the rise in terrorism threats and activity, governments are boosting their security measures at the borders through the implementation of biometrics. First, U.S. Customs and Border Protection is set to launch a new border entry and exit control pilot program at Otay Mesa, San Diego in an effort to identify and apprehend foreigners with expired visas who are have surpassed their permitted duration.

Additionally, the UK’s Home Office has pledged its support for border officials using coercion to collect the fingerprints of migrants as part of an overall effort to track refugees crossing the Mediterranean.

Aadhaar

Indian Supreme Court’s decision to place a cease order on the national Indian government concerning the use of Aadhaar data is jeopardizing many of the national social programs that relied upon the biometric database for citizen authentication.

The telecom industry is also affected by the cease order. Indian telecom operators plan to turn to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in an effort to get approval for using the Aadhaar biometric database to speed up subscriber verification since the home ministry is said to have objected to the idea citing security concern.

Fingerprint

And finally, fingerprint technology continues to be a popular area of interest with this week bringing two notable stories in the fingerprint field. First off, BMO Financial Group announced it is introducing Apple Touch ID capabilities to its mobile banking app for its Canadian customers.

Finally, Precise Biometrics licensed its fingerprint recognition products, Precise BioMatch Embedded and Precise BioMatch Mobile, to Taiwanese sensor manufacturer JP Sensor Corporation.
