Jamaica introducing facial recognition to passport production

Jamaica’s Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA) is introducing a facial recognition feature to the production of passports.

PICA CEO, Jennifer McDonald, said the facial recognition feature was initially trialed at 15 immigration kiosks in the Kingston’s Norman Manley International Airport and at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay and, based on positive results, PICA has decided to expand and incorporate it directly in the passport production process.

The project is in the final stages of implementation and is expected to be completed by the end of March.

McDonald says that, “One of the primary reasons for this is to reduce double identity. It really serves to protect the identity of the citizen, because the worst thing you want is to come to renew your passport and be told that it has been renewed already, because someone stole your identity”.

About 20 per cent of the over two million yearly passengers passing through Jamaica’s two international airports are now processed using the 15 automated immigration kiosks.
