Aflac Japan to secure mobile biometric insurance payments with Nok Nok Labs’ biometrics

Customer of insurance provider Aflac Japan are now able to request “immediate payment service” for cancer treatment on mobile devices by utilizing biometric authentication from Nok Nok Labs, deployed by Fujitsu Limited.

The deployment went live in December, 2018, and significantly reduces the time and effort involved in paperwork otherwise required by patients, according to the announcement. The Aflac mobile app now enables patients to securely log in and process insurance claims with the Nok Nok Labs S3 Authentication Suite by using the fingerprint or facial recognition capabilities of their Android or iOS device for a fast, frictionless experience based on FIDO global authentication standards.

“Aflac is the first Japanese insurance provider to deploy a FIDO-certified solution, and we would like to continue collaborating with Nok Nok Labs to introduce it to banks, insurance industry and other industries.” said Michihiko Ejiri, VP, Head of Portal Service Division, Service Technology Unit, Fujitsu Limited.

Fujitsu has been a systems integration partner of Nok Nok Labs in Japan since 2017.

Nok Nok Labs cites a report from Biometrics Research Group, Inc. forecasting the global marketplace for biometric solutions in the healthcare market will reach approximately $5 billion by 2020. Based on the trends in next generation authentication adoption seen in the e-commerce, online payments, and banking verticals, the company expects the insurance industry to follow Aflac’s implementation and other initial use cases with broader adoption.

“Insurance claim systems contain vital information that need to be secure, yet easily accessible for patients. We are pleased that Aflac chose to utilize the Nok Nok Labs technology through our partner Fujitsu, to enable strong and easy to use authentication that allows patients to process their claims with robust security, but with less burden to the end user,” said Nok Nok Labs’ CEO Phillip Dunkelberger. “Fujitsu should be commended for this very successful deployment with Aflac.”

Nok Nok Labs reached a distribution deal with MTRIX GmbH for the German market earlier this year, as Japanese institution MUFG Bank deployed the NNL S3 Suite.
