Civic deploys Onfido biometrics to onboard new Civic Wallet users

Civic has deployed Onfido‘s AI-powered identity verification technology to securely onboard new users for its Civic Wallet, which is now open for pre-registration.

Civic Wallet enables consumers to store, send and receive crypto while maintaining control of their personal data. Private keys are stored on the user’s mobile device, and redundant backup systems ensure that the digital wallet can be restored if a person’s mobile device is lost or stolen. Onfido’s ID document verification and facial recognition technology helps Civic quickly verify new user’s identities and Civic’s blockchain-based technology secures personal information by allowing multiple parties to use personally identifiable information without sharing the underlying data.

The combination of identity and payment also allows for a new subset of product offerings such as age-gated products or geo-restricted services.

“We chose to partner with Onfido because they share our vision of providing everyone with a digital identity they may own and control,” explains Civic CEO and co-founder, Vinny Lingham. “As our earliest identity.com validator, we saw firsthand how their AI verification technology delivered higher pass rates without compromising on fraud protection. Growing this partnership was the best match for us and for Civic Wallet.”

“We are privileged to partner with Civic and work together in pursuit of using blockchain for decentralized identity management,” adds Husayn Kassai, CEO and co-founder at Onfido.

Onfido launched an international partner program last month to bring its biometric identity verification service to new markets and foster new use cases for it. In may the company revealed a revenue increase of 137 percent on a year-over-year basis in a busy first quarter of its fiscal 2019 year.
