Bio-key tech used to enroll fingerprint biometrics of more than 9M customers of South African bank
South Africa’s Capitec Bank Holding Company has enrolled more than 9 million customers with its in-branch biometric client identification system supplied by BIO-key, according to a company announcement.
The system was initially deployed by Capitec in 2015 as an innovative system for streamlining client identification and enhancing security, and at the time was one of the first in the country. BIO-key was selected for the accuracy of its biometric technology, the technology’s scaling capabilities, and its provision of a foundation for current and future security innovations, as confirmed by comprehensive testing, the company says.
“One of the most powerful indicators of the value we provide our partners and customers is when they expand their use of BIO-key software in the years after initially deploying it,” states Jim Sullivan, BIO-key SVP of Strategy and Compliance. “Capitec was one of the first in the world to leverage fingerprint biometrics to secure their clients’ identities against theft and fraud. They demonstrated to their clients the advantages of using fingerprint data to increase their client’s security, offer paperless transactions and make banking faster.”
The announcement comes on the heels of a major new customer win for BIO-key in Nigeria, as the company boosts its presence in Africa.
Capitec also uses technology from Daon for client authentication.
