Gemalto acquires Avalon Biometrics: reports

Categories Biometrics News

Reports are emerging today to suggest that Avalon Biometrics has been acquired by digital security solutions and smart card provider, Gemalto.

Early Monday morning, the twitter account @SUMAMEXICO tweeted “We are pleased to announce that Avalon Biometrics & Gemalto joined forces. Gemalto recently acquired Avalon Biometrics,” and in a separate tweet, confirmed that “Avalon Biometrics will be part of the e-Journey Business Group within Gemalto Government Programs Business Line.”

This story has also been reported in Planet Biometrics, which suggests the company will offer a range of services for border management, visa management and document verification.

Reported previously in BiometricUpdate.com, Gemalto has recently been appointed prime contractor and turnkey supplier to provide the Ghana Immigration Services with a complete visa and border management system as a part of its eGhana project. In conjunction with Avalon Biometrics, the company will also implement a fully computerized system for visa and permit applications processing and issuance.

Neither company was available to comment on the reported acquisition by the time of publishing this article, though an update will be provided. As of yet, it is unclear how this recently-awarded contract affects the acquisition or was affected by the reported deal.

Gemalto has also recently supplied an ePassport solution to Taiwan.

More to come.
