Biometric security firm Biometric Identification and Security Systems, Inc. (BIOMIDS) announced it has named former Worcester Polytechnic Institute president Dennis Berkey president and chief operating officer.
He served as president of WPI from July 2004 to May 2013. Prior to that, he served as a dean and university provost at Boston University.
“Berkey brings important expertise in education, broad experience on a variety of boards in fields relevant to our business, and strong management and leadership skills. We are delighted to have him join us at a critical time in our development,” said BIOMIDS CEO and founder Frank Mann.
Berkey is a mathematician and mathematics educator who has previously published research in applied mathematics, as well as textbooks in traditional and applied calculus.
Additionally, he has served on regional and national boards of directors in higher education, health care, life sciences and STEM education, and currently serves on the board of directors of the Massachusetts Education and Finance Authority.
“Biometrics is a powerful enabling technology,” said Berkey, “and the BIOMIDS team has a clear and compelling vision for its promising applications across many fields and industries including higher education where I have spent many fulfilling years.
BIOMIDS provides a range of biometrics technology including facial recognition, speech recognition and iris scanning. The company’s applications can be used with Windows and Apple iOS platforms, which take advantage of biometrics technology.
