Peru to implement biometric identification for prepaid phone activation

Peruvian telecommunications services regulator Osiptel announced that operators will be required to biometrically verify the identity of new customers who are activating a prepaid phone, according to a report by Telecompaper.

The new rules will ensure that prepaid phones can only be activated when the user’s fingerprint matches with the fingerprints on record at the country’s national ID register, Reniec.

All authorized distributors will be required to begin introducing fingerprint identification for new customers activating their prepaid phones until it becomes mandatory in all points of sale from January 1, 2017.
