Biometrics and elections, Aadhaar, online fraud, Intel’s authentication app & more top stories

Here’s a recap of the most popular biometrics industry news that appeared on BiometricUpdate.com this past week.

Aadhaar Supreme Court decision

In one of this week’s most popular stories, Nandan Nilekani, the former chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), argued in an opinion piece published in the Indian Express that the recent Supreme Court decision limiting Aadhaar use should be appealed.

Fighting organized online fraud

In a special guest post, NuData Security director of customer success Ryan Wilk discussed how the IRS needs to change its security measures to follow the lead of large e-commerce companies and financial institutions, who have recognized the failure of Knowledge Based Authentication and switch to User Behavior Analytics, also known as behavioral biometrics.

Biometric authentication app

Intel Security bundled its biometric authentication app True Key released into a new line of consumer security services designed to protect consumers’ digital lives and their devices. True Key allows consumers to log into mobile apps, websites, and devices using a combination of factors such as their face, fingerprint or devices.

Facial and iris recognition

Facial and iris recognition are two of the most widely adopted biometric modalities. This week, Morpho (Safran) signed a new 5-year agreement with New Zealand Customs Services (NZCS) through to 2020 to provide eGates with facial recognition capabilities across major New Zealand airports.

EyeVerify announced that three independent organizations have conducted extensive accuracy testing on its Eyeprint ID product, in which the biometrics solution performed at accuracy levels that meet the market need for secure mobile authentication for password replacement, medical prescriptions and mobile payments.

Biometric Associates, LP (BAI) announced that it has been granted the DoD Unified Capabilities Approved Products List (APL) approval of the baiMobile 3000MP Bluetooth smart card reader as an MMD.

Finally, Visa Inc. introduced a new specification which will integrate palm, voice, iris, or facial authentication capabilities with chip card transaction.

Fingerprints

Fingerprint technology, another popular biometric modality, continued to dominate headlines this week, starting with Precise Biometrics partnership with Fingerprint Cards (FPC) to integrate their mobile fingerprint recognition technology in Blu’s new smartphone, Pure XL.

Meanwhile, Crossmatch announced that its Verifier Sentry handheld device has been awarded the Biometric Identification Device of 2015 by Government Security News (GSN).

Biometrics and elections

More and more governments are adopting biometric-enabled registration systems to increase the accuracy and transparency of the electoral process. GenKey is one of the leading vendors of this technology and this week the company announced that its biometric voter verification solution has been successfully deployed, with the cooperation of local partner STL, at the District Level Elections in Ghana, which was held on September 1.

In other biometric voting news, the National Election Commission of Somaliland has begun testing an iris recognition-based voter registration system in preparation for a national election system, with the fourth trial voter records comprised of people in the Hargeisa and Toghdeer regions.

Analyst reports

This week brought along a few analyst reports, but CSC’s “Next generation in-store technology: Where do shoppers and retailers stand?” proved to be one of the more intriguing reports. In the report, CSC found that 25% of UK retailers are using facial recognition technology in an effort to monitor customer activities at their stores.

TechNavio also published two separate reports about the global hand geometry biometrics market and the biometrics market in BRIC countries, while Hexa Research has published a report examining the biometrics technology market based on application.

Industry events

The fall biometrics events season is upon us and the European Association for Biometrics is leading the events as it prepares to organize three ‘Biometrics in Banking and Payments’ seminars that will address the opportunities of biometrics in the financial and payments markets.

Finally, BORDERPOL held its first North America meeting in Washington, D.C. The event examined means to curtail terrorist travel, in conjunction with border government representatives from around the world, along with the private sector and major international organizations.
