Airports in Pakistan, China, Canada and Turkey deploy biometrics

A series of deployments and partnerships are bringing biometrics to airports in Ottawa, Canada, Beijing, Istanbul and Islamabad.

SenseTime has partnered with the Beijing Capital International Airport Company to develop a biometric smart security check-in system for Daxing Airport, which is currently under construction.

Passengers will perform a self-verification process with SenseTime’s facial recognition technology. The system also uses biometric verification for luggage check processes, which has been successful in testing.

The changes are expected to improve the airport’s hourly processing capacity from 180 people to 260.

Preparations have also begun at Islamabad International Airport for the installation of cameras equipped with facial recognition capabilities, Dawn reports. The cameras area being deployed to lounges for arrivals and departures of both domestic and international flights.

The same system is also expected to be implemented at Karachi and Lahore airports in the future.

Primary inspection kiosks have been launched for fingerprint verification of foreign nationals and permanent residents at Ottawa International Airport, through a partnership between the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the Ottawa International Airport Authority.

The system is intended to prevent the use of stolen or falsified visas or permits. The system does not apply to Canadian citizens, citizenship applicants, and U.S. citizens, but all others are required to biometrically enroll under rules that came into force in 2018.

The Ottawa deployment consists of 21 kiosks, and kiosks area also expected to be launched in at all major Canadian airports in 2019.

In an interview with International Airport Review at Passenger Terminal Expo 2019, IGA Chief Planning Officer Ismail Polat says the new Istanbul Airport will provide biometric passport checkpoints for check-ins, bag drop, and security checks.

The technology is part of an extensive investment in technology to provide a faster, more efficient user experience.

A new report from JCDecaux on “The Changing Face of Airport Travel” shows that there is a significant disparity in the satisfaction levels of tech users and non-tech users in the departure lounge, according to a company blog post.

The number of biometric touchpoints at airports will increase by 27 percent CAGR between this year and 2022, according to new research from Acuity Market Intelligence.
