BioID biometrics used for remote identity proofing for SIM card activation

BioID today announced the integration of its biometric facial recognition technology into POS AG’s remote identity proofing solution for prepaid SIM card self-activation. Using BioID PhotoVerify, POS AG offers a full remote real-time identity proofing workflow including biometric capability for determining the ownership of an ID document.

Mandatory SIM card registration laws in require people to provide personal information, including a valid ID and sometimes their biometrics, as a condition for purchasing or activating a SIM card. According to the GSMA report “Access to Mobile Services and Proof of Identity 2019” (pgs 46-53), as of February 2019 more than 140 countries around the world have mandatory SIM card registration laws.

BioID’s PhotoVerify solution combines liveness detection and face recognition for identity verification using only two selfies and works with any device or any off-the-shelf camera. BioID’s liveness detection feature detects photo, video and avatar attacks.

“POS AG aims at complementing the identity proofing market with a total solution that reliably determines not only that the ID is genuine but also that it belongs to the submitting person,” explains POS AG CEO Bernt Vossebein. “User experience, security, and reliability were the main factors for choosing the German company BioID as a partner to win the market.”

“PhotoVerify was explicitly designed to solve the last mile of the online identity proofing for use cases like POS AG’s prepaid SIM card activation service, adds BioID CEO Ho Chang. “This collaboration enables a cost efficient and most importantly accurate solution with frictionless user experience.”

Last month German self-service password management SaaS provider TESIS SYSware integrated BioID’s cloud biometric BioID Web Service to enable enterprises to implement facial authentication as part of a multi-factor solution.
