Smiths Detection demos biometric checkpoint solution at inter airport Europe 2019

Threat detection and screening technology developer Smiths Detection is demonstrating its biometric checkpoint solution that delivers risk-based screening practices at the inter airport Europe 2019 event, the company announced.

With significant passenger growth expected by 2037, the air travel industry is working together toward a common goal of enabling all commercial air travel processes with a single facial biometric token. To ensure operational efficiency and deliver an enhanced passenger experience, biometric technology is extensively deployed at airport border control, bag drop and boarding gates. Biometrics for border control have recently been successfully adopted worldwide at Vilnius airport, Vancouver airport, and at Perth airport, among many others.

“Biometrics is an urgently needed solution to provide seamless checkpoint security,” said Smiths Detection Global Market Director Aviation Richard Thompson. “Ever increasing air passenger traffic plus advances in biometrics, artificial intelligence and integrated screening technology mean that risk-based screening is now firmly on the fast track. Smiths Detection said a proof of concept that combines biometric identity management solutions with screening solutions was developed in partnership with industry experts. The solution makes use of Smith’s Detection CT scanner, HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX, the iCMORE Weapons automatic object recognition capability and the tray return system, iLane.evo.

The company explains that by integrating biometrics into the checkpoint, it will be easy to match passengers with their trays for real-time risk-based screening that will improve operations and reduce hours spent at the airport for passengers. It adds that passenger and tray identification deliver data insights to help airport management make more informed decisions.
