Simprints awarded for biometric ID technology to secure healthcare and vaccine delivery
Simprints has been recognized for its work delivering biometric technology to create and leverage digital identity for healthcare by multiple organizations, on the heels of its award from MIT Solve’s Health Security & Pandemics Challenge.
In addition to the 2020 ‘Health Security and Pandemics’ Challenge from MIT Solve, Simprints has been awarded the Elevate Prize for Health Security from the Elevate Prize Foundation. The prize includes $300,000 in funding for Simprints, the largest amount among more than $1 million in prize funding announced for the 2020 class of MIT Solve winners.
At the Transformational Business Conference and Awards 2020, presented by the Financial Times and the International Finance Corporation (part of the World Bank Group), Simprints has been honored with the ‘Health, Wellness, and Disease Prevention’ Award and the ‘Excellence in Disruptive Technologies’ Award’ for the impact of verification in global health and development delivered by its biometric technology.
Simprints biometrics have been used to verify more than 660,000 beneficiaries of healthcare, financial and education services, according to the award announcement.
Vaccine delivery to developing countries with poor digital identity systems is a particular concern as scientists race to develop a vaccine for COVID-19. The impact of the virus threatens to set back “25 years of progress in just 25 weeks,” according to the Goalkeepers report from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Getting the vaccine to people in poorer countries weeks faster could potentially save thousands of lives from the virus and indirect impacts to income and health.
Digital ID was not available during the Ebola outbreak, and has been identified by the World Bank as a potential game-changing technology that could have helped to save lives.
