Biometric card by Idex and TMC wins UnionPay certification, Zwipe Pay ONE selected by Vopy

New Idex Biometrics CEO on fingerprint payment card vision and leadership focus

China UnionPay has certified a biometric payment card with fingerprint sensor technology from Idex Biometrics and a secure element from Tongxin Microelectronic (TMC), which was developed as part of an existing collaboration.

The biometric payment card will be manufactured by Goldpac, and according to Idex, it is already available for volume production.

“TMC and IDEX continue their leadership in the biometric smart card market with the only solutions to be certified by CUP,” said John Zou, Vice President at TMC. “We are looking forward to further innovation and extending our advantage with Idex’s next-generation TrustedBio solution and the TMC THD89.”

The news marks the second biometric card with Idex technology that has received approval by China UnionPay, following a first one last May.

“This second CUP certification continues the trend of increasing global adoption of biometric cards,” commented Vince Graziani, CEO of IDEX Biometrics. “Our collaboration with TMC will make this biometric payment card available to a broad range of card issuers which will increase the number of customers who have access to the technology.”

Idex has adopted a strategy of expansion focusing on strategic partnerships with SE industry leaders. Back in 2018, Idex worked with Mastercard on a remote enrollment solution for biometric payment cards.

More recently, the company has received two-volume production orders for fingerprint payment cards technology placed by South Korea-based firm Ubivelox.

Swedish fintech chooses Zwipe, to issue 100K biometric payment cards in Q4

Zwipe Pay ONE has been selected by Swedish fintech Vopy to power biometric payment cards it will issue, beginning in Q4 2021.

Vopy plans to conduct a pilot beginning in Q3 2021, issue 100,000 biometric payment cards in the fourth quarter of this calendar year, and another 500,000 during 2022. The fintech specializes in cross-border transfers, payments, insurance and banking services embedded in social media platforms and mobile apps.

“As a disruptive financial services platform provider, it is crucial for Vopy to deliver a payment solution built on world-class security and user experience. Having closely followed Zwipe’s innovations in biometric payments and their global delivery network of card suppliers, our decision to go for Zwipe Pay ONE was a natural one. We are very excited about our collaboration with Zwipe and we aim to bring our strengthened financial services portfolio to partners in Asia, USA and Europe,” says Håkan Tollefsen, CEO, at Vopy AB.

“The decision by Vopy to pilot and rollout biometric payment cards in 2021 based on Zwipe Pay ONE is a testament to our advanced and competitive technology and global delivery capabilities thanks to our card supplier network,” comments André Løvestam, CEO of Zwipe.  “We are grateful for Vopy’s confidence and ready to support them with biometric payment cards on their ambitious expansion journey.”
