Clarkson University announced it has named biometrics expert Stephanie A. Schuckers the Paynter-Krigman professor in engineering science at the university’s Wallace H. Coulter School of Engineering.

Prior to being appointed, Schuckers served as a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Clarkson University.

She is also the director of the Center of Identification Technology Research, a National Science Foundation industry/university cooperative research center that focuses on biometrics and functions.

Her research focuses primarily on processing and interpreting signals which stem from the human body.

A large part of Schuckers’ research is devoted to improving the performance and security of biometric fingerprint and iris recognition systems, such as the development of liveness detection software which safeguards fingerprint systems from spoof attacks using fake fingers.

As a biometrics expert, Schuckers has over 40 journal publications and over 60 other academic publications, in addition to testifying in 2013 on biometrics for a subcommittee of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Schuckers has a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Iowa, along with a master of science and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan.
