Fingerprint biometrics and facial recognition most popular this week
Here’s a recap of the most popular biometrics industry news that appeared on BiometricUpdate.com this past week.
Fingerprints
Once again, fingerprint recognition were among this week’s most popular stories, starting with Integrated Biometrics announcement that Bethcom selected its Columbo FBI certified FAP 30 sensor to incorporate into its new Phalcon physical access control product.
Samsung revealed that filed a U.S. patent application for a new non-touch method for fingerprint recognition on mobile devices.
BioSSL partnered with the Danish smart card firm CardLab, in which it will integrate CardLabs’ new dual interface biometric bank card with fingerprint sensor into the BioSSL secure platform to create a complete and fully secure financial platform.
Last week’s Google I/O conference brought along three intriguing announcements regarding the Android M Developer Preview. First, Fingerprint Cards (FPC) announced it supported Google in the development of fingerprint sensor technology as part of the Android M Developer Preview taking place at last week’s Google I/O, while its shares saw record high prices.
Additionally, Google posted a new video in which product manager Maya Ben-Ari uses a Nexus 5 smartphone to demonstrate some of the new Android M features, such as its fingerprint scanning for its upcoming Android Pay service.
And finally, Nok Nok Labs announced it integrated its S3 Authentication Suite with the recently unveiled Google Android M Developer Preview.
Facial Recognition
There were also a substantial number of stories relating to face recognition, this week, starting with Aurora launching FaceSentinel, the world’s first Deep Learning-powered facial recognition access control system.
China’s Tsinghua University and Hangzhou-based Tzekwan Technology unveiled that they have designed and developed the world’s first ATM that features an embedded facial recognition feature.
NEC Corporation announced it secured a contract from shopping mall developer PT AEON Mall Sinar Mas Land (AMSL) Indonesia in which it will provide a facial recognition-based video analytics surveillance and infrastructure systems for AEON MALL Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD) in Tangerang, Indonesia.
Finally, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents will test facial recognition technology over the next three months in an effort to identify immigration violators

Google announced that it patented a new technology that transforms a contact lens into an identification device.
Microsoft unveiled that it is set to release the Windows 10 for Phones version alongside new Microsoft Lumia flagship smartphones, to coincide with the Windows 10 release later this year. Rumors are that the Microsoft Lumia smartphones will feature iris recognition for access control.
Goode Intelligence published its “Analyst Report, Biometrics for Banking; Market and Technology Analysis, Adoption Strategies and Forecasts 2015-2020,” which forecasts that there will be over one billion users accessing banking services through biometric systems by 2017.
Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) division revealed it has been developing Project Abacus, a behavioral biometrics-based authorization system that detects the nuances of a user’s voice, typing patterns, facial features, and location
Finally, in a Q&A interview, Pindrop Security CEO and co-founder Vijay Balasubramaniyan, Ph.D., discussed how his company’s phone fraud prevention and call center authentication solution can identify between 80 to 90 percent of their client’s fraudulent calls.
