K&L Gates launches biometric data compliance and defense practice

K&L Gates, a fully integrated global law firm with lawyers in five continents, has started a practice in biometric data compliance and defense.

The biometrics data compliance and defense group will advise clients on issues stemming from the use of face, voice and iris recognition, fingerprints and hand geometry for authentication.

Since Illinois passed the Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) in 2008, several other states have either enacted or are considering the passage of biometric information laws, with potentially sweeping regulations around biometric data also set to take effect in the European Union in 2018.

The initiative includes lawyers from the firm’s privacy, data protection and information management; class action litigation defense; insurance coverage; and labor, employment and workplace safety practices, among others.

K&L Gates advises clients on a range of issues and compliance matters, including: defending biometric information privacy act suits; complying with the biometric information privacy act and other similar legislation; developing compliance programs for companies employing biometric systems in the United States and around the world, and; biometrics-related insurance coverage issues.
