ImageWare partners with Gatekeeper Innovation to tackle opioid crisis with biometrics

ImageWare Systems has announced a partnership with Gatekeeper Innovation to combine their technologies to combat the national opioid epidemic in the U.S. The companies have developed an innovative solution featuring Gatekeeper Innovation’s Safer Lock integrated with ImageWare’s FDA-cleared patented pillphone mobile health management platform to secure powerful medications and securely connect patients with healthcare providers, according to the announcement.

The opioid crisis cost the lives of 48,000 Americans in 2017, and the Council of Economic Advisors estimates the cost of the problem at $504 billion in 2015, the company’s say.

The Safer Lock is a patented four-digit combination locking cap sold with a Safer Lock bottle or retrofitted to many existing bottles used in pharmacies, and prevents non-patients from accessing powerful medications. The pillphone provides biometrically secured mobile communication to increase patient education, support chronic conditions, increase medication adherence, and allow medical care providers to remotely monitor and support patients.

“The pillphone is the perfect companion application to Safer Lock as it allows the caregiver or medical professional to provide real-time secure communication with the patient, reduce abuse, and ensure that the patient is taking their medication as prescribed,” says ImageWare Systems Chairman and CEO Jim Miller. “We are excited to be partnering with Gatekeeper Innovation, Inc. and for the potential life-saving opportunity this partnership offers.”

“By reducing medication diversion, improving patient adherence and connecting patients to real-time resources, the Safer Lock and pillphone partnership can change the future of patient well-being,” explains Gatekeeper Innovations CEO Kim Box.

ImageWare launched the pillphone earlier this year, and also recently expanded its GoVerifyID Enterprise Suite with digital identity onboarding and management technology.
