Fujitsu FIDO biometric service deployed to improve utility maintenance efficiency

TEPCO Systems Corporation has deployed Fujitsu’s FIDO-compliant Online Biometric Authentication Service for a new system developed to improve the efficiency of utility pole maintenance operations.

Utility pole maintenance operations by TEPCO Power Grid now include a system for residents to submit pictures of a problem or something unusual about a utility pole, enabling employees to begin assessing the situation remotely for a faster response. The new authentication service increases the convenience and security of personal identification when workers access the system from work PCs and smartphones, and improves operational efficiency, according to the announcement.

Fujitsu’s Online Biometric Authentication Service allowed TEPCO Power Grid to set up its new system in a short space of time by providing the necessary servers and software to implement FIDO-compliant authentication and smartphones with biometric capabilities. Fujitsu also supported the development of the client app. The employee’s work PC is linked with his or her smartphone by reading a QR code, after which the biometric information stored in the smartphone can be used to access the system.

In November BioSec and Fujitsu demonstrated an interactive stadium security concept based on palm vein recognition at the Arena Summit in Germany.
