Argentina selects HID Global to power national digital identity

Argentina has chosen HID Global to digitize the country’s mandatory National Identity Document (DNI), allowing citizens to request appointments, receive health information, and access credentials such as their driver’s license, the company has announced.

The partnership between HID, Argentina’s Ministry of Interior, Public Works and Housing through the National Registry of Persons (Renaper), and the Ministry of Modernization will see HID goID citizen identity technology integrated with the Mi Argentina app to power the digital identity credential. There are 47 million DNI cards in circulation, and the smartphone version was granted full legal equivalence with them by recent legislation. With the integration, the app will also provide credential access offline.

“The Government of Argentina is leading the way in bringing the convenience and security of mobile identity to its citizens,” states José D’Amico, director of Renaper. “This innovative application is not only easy to get, but we also believe this could be the first step in digitizing identity across the government in Argentina and potentially other countries in years to come.”

Citizens can request a mobile ID and authenticate their identity at a Renaper office, after which they will receive an email code to activate the digital DNI. If the citizen’s mobile phone is lost or stolen, the credential can be immediately revoked.

“HID Global is committed to providing identity solutions that meet the evolving standards of the 21st century,” says Jessica Westerouen van Meeteren, VP and managing director of Citizen Identity with HID Global. “The government of Argentina’s implementation of our technology provides its citizens with innovative ID access and the ease of a completely mobile experience from registration to issuance.”

HID has previously partnered with the government of Argentina to make its passport compliant with ICAO biometric standards, and the company extended goID’s capabilities a year ago to provide end-to-end deployment and management.
