Edge computing and embedded AI platform provider Thundercomm has released a smart retail solution that combines 5G- and AI-based applications with an end-to-end commercialization model, the company announced.

Smart Visiting Solution is an AI facial recognition-enabled store management system that helps store employees solve customer issues. It features a front-end camera, an edge computing platform, a back-end management system and a user application, and it includes a number of capabilities such as VIP recognition, customer flow statistics, customer sentiment analysis, equipment management and remote store inspection, assist retailers with personalized and customized services, enhance the efficiency of store management, reduce operating costs and increase single-store revenues. Smart Visiting Solution supports integration with common CRM and ERP systems for better customer service.

The solution has already been piloted at a few stores in Japan and China where it was used for customer flow analysis and to identify shopping habits, among others. A Japanese retail store reduced labor costs by 5 percent and increased overall revenue by 25 percent, the company claims, while another in Beijing increased its monthly sales over the long term by an average of 25 percent and by 10 percent year-on-year.

Thundercomm notes that it is interested in committing to various partnerships that would turn traditional retail into a smart sector.

According to the recent report “From ‘Bricks to Clicks’: Navigating the Retail Revolution,” almost half of U.S. consumers surveyed say they are “excited” about retailers using face biometric technologies to tailor their in-store shopping.
