Apple granted patent to enable Apple TV user profile customization via Touch ID

Apple has been granted a new patent entitled “Device Configuration for Multiple Users Using Remote User Biometrics,” which covers new technology that could make it easier for Apple TV and iPad users to configure the device for each shared user with their fingerprint, according to a report by the International Business Times.

Filed on January 23, 2014 and published July 23, the US patent application describes a method in which a remote with an integrated Touch ID sensor transmits fingerprint data to a device, using the example of an Apple TV, and customizes it based on the user profile associated with the data.

The process would allow individual users who are sharing a device such as the Apple TV, to customize the device to their precise settings using their fingerprint to change between profiles.

Though the patent application uses the example of a television and a remote control with an integrated biometric sensor, Apple explains that the technology can also be used in other applications such as on smartphones, home automation controls, set-top boxes and laptop computers.

The technology could also be potentially used to allow for multiple user profiles or logins on other Apple devices, such as iPhones or iPads.

The patent application provides the example of a parent using the technology to restrict the television content of a child, blocking any programs with mature content, or using the technology to bring up individual users’ music playlists.
