Hungary begins issuing biometric id cards

Earlier this week, Hungary began issuing biometric ID cards that feature fingerprints and electronic signatures and combine personal identification, social security and tax identification information.

The new identity cards were introduced by interior ministry state secretary László Tasnádi who commented that the rollout of the eID cards will “open the door to digital public administration”.

The new eID card will speed up and simplify public administration for citizens. It will be valid for six years for citizens over the age of 18 and for three years in the case of minors. Citizens will receive their cards within eight days of submitting their application.
