Hikvision to deploy 1,900 cameras with face biometrics for $33M smart city contract

Hikvision biometric facial recognition cameras

Hikvision has won a contract worth an estimated $33 million to install roughly 1,900 cameras with face biometrics as part of a smart city project, reports IPVM (subscription required and highly recommended).

Four companies bid on the project to deploy a surveillance system in Shanghe County, Shandong province, but the other three are system integrators, rather than manufacturers. The contract, posted by Shanghe police last September, is for a public-private partnership with a 12-year term.

In addition to networking the system’s cameras, all of which will be used with facial recognition, the system is expected to be connected to cameras in private spaces like businesses, as well as the Sharp Eyes platform operated by the capital of neighboring Jinan Province.

Hikvision was recently cut off from U.S. investors as that country’s government continues its crackdown on companies alleged to have participated in repressive government programs. The company has denied various allegations against it from the U.S.

The company’s Indian subsidiary also released a biometric access control terminal with mask alerts in January.
