Responsible and ethical commercial biometrics

The ethical responsibilities of businesses deploying biometrics for commercial purposes are, in some cases, encoded in laws and regulations. Getting those responsibilities right is crucial to establishing and maintaining trust with users. In the majority of cases, however, businesses are left with precious little guidance in how to manage consent, data storage, and other important issues.

Dr. Stephanie Schuckers, director of the Center for Identification Technology Research (CITER), Venable Managing Director of Technology Business Strategy Jeremy Grant, Biometrics Institute CEO Isabelle Moeller and Biometrics team lead for Baker Donelson’s Data Protection, Privacy and Cybersecurity Practice David Oberly join Biometric Update to discuss the different factors that organizations should keep in mind when planning and implementing commercial applications of biometrics.

Schuckers is one of the world’s leading researchers on biometrics liveness and is a major contributor to FIDO and other standards. Grant is a former senior executive advisor to NIST’s National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace. Moeller has led the publication of several influential resources for the responsible and ethical use of biometrics, as well as the launch of an award-winning public education tool. Oberly is experienced in BIPA litigation, the author of “Biometric Data Privacy Compliance and Best Practices”, and frequently turns his expertise to explaining the implications of case law on America’s most contentious biometrics compliance requirements.

Their combined expertise in biometrics research and testing, digital identity strategy, and regulation will provide the foundation for an illuminating discussion on the most pressing concerns of stakeholders from around the biometrics industry.

In addition to consent and data storage, issues related to system architecture, user notification, algorithm choices and alternative means of identification or authentication will be among the topics explored.
