CMU CyLab Biometrics Center recognized as a 2015 Edison Awards finalist

Carnegie Mellon University’s CyLab Biometrics Center has been named a 2015 Edison Awards finalist in the category of Applied Technology.

Under the direction of Dr. Marios Savvides, the CyLab Biometrics Center strives toward advancing and improving biometric authentication technologies, such as facial and iris recognition.

One of the group’s main focus areas is in researching new techniques to improve image acquisition and image quality.

“I’m very proud to see the innovative technology my students and I have developed recognized by the Edison Awards,” said Savvides, research professor of electrical and computer engineering and founder and director of the CyLab Biometrics Center. “Receiving this award and seeing our technology being used by law enforcement and making an impact is very gratifying. We’re pushing the limits of current biometric identification technology.”

Founded in 2008, the Edison Awards recognizes and honors innovation and excellence in the development, marketing and launch of new products and services.

Institutions and business leaders that have been recognized in previous years include Tesla/SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing.

The 2015 Edison Awards will be held in New York on April 23, 2015.
