Lithuania to deploy MorphoTOP fingerprint scanners for visa requests
Morpho (Safran) announced it has signed an agreement to provide 145 MorphoTOP optical fingerprint scanners to the Lithuanian government, which they will use to process all visa requests.
This marks Morpho’s first direct contract with the Information Technology and Communications Department to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Lithuanian embassies will use the MorphoTOP terminals to collect photos and fingerprints for all individuals who are requesting visas, which will then be stored in a secure database.
Border control authorities in the Schengen Area can then access this data and compare it against previously stored data to check a person’s identity and ensure that it is the same person who received a visa.
The database is available to border control authorities in countries that are part of the Schengen Area. When a traveler enters this area, authorities can check their identity to ensure that it is the same person who received a visa, thus limiting fraud.
The biometric system is part of Visa Information System, a European Commission initiative that launched in October 2011 which allows Schengen countries to exchange visa data in an effort to reinforce border security.
“Morpho already has Lithuanian customers in the telecom and explosive/chemical detection systems sectors,” said Jacques van Zijp, VP of Morpho’s Europe business unit in the government identity solutions division. “But this is the first time the Lithuanian government has placed its trust in our identity management solutions”.
The Lithuanian government’s purchase of MorphoTOP terminals was partly financed by the European Commission’s External Borders Fund.
