EAB workshop to focus on privacy issues involving biometric technologies

The European Association for Biometrics (EAB) and IBM announced they will host the EAB Workshop “Preserving Privacy in an age of increased surveillance – A Biometrics Perspective” on October 19 at IBM SouthBank in London.

The free workshop will focus on privacy issues involving biometric technologies and applications helping to understand key concerns and trends, including the impact of biometrics on privacy, privacy protection technologies, and discrepancies in knowledge and practice.

The event will also analyze the potential impact of the convergence of commercial and governmental objectives of collecting information on citizens.

“Together we will reflect upon the many new opportunities and threats arising from the rapid increase in the channels of biometric data capture (e.g. sensors on mobile devices) and processing capabilities,” said Farzin Deravi, moderator of the workshop and board member of the EAB. “The strong identifying capabilities of biometrics should always be assessed in combination with its powers of dissolving privacy. We have a responsibility to equally address some of the most serious threats while providing directions of overcoming them.”

The one-day workshop, which will run from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., will bring together end users, technology developers, researchers and legal experts to discuss the challenges presented by biometric technologies and how to address them.

Previously reported, the European Association for Biometrics (EAB) will hold its fourth ‘Biometrics in Banking and Payments’ seminar on October 16 at London’s CCT Venues in Thames Quay.
