Fingerprint sensor prices expected to drop in 2016

According to reports in Digitimes and Android Headlines, fingerprint sensor prices are expected to fall in 2016 due to increased competition in the market and accelerated adoption by handset makers.

Both reports suggest that fingerprint sensor prices are likely to fall 40% in 2016, dipping below US$3 per unit. By the end of 2015, prices had already dropped as low as US$5.

The Digitimes report claims more than 20 companies worldwide are involved in the development of fingerprint sensors but that the fall in fingerprint sensor prices could lead to consolidation in the market.

Since Apple added fingerprint technology to its iPhone 5s in 2013, many manufacturers have included the technology with high-end smartphones but with falling prices, entry and mid-range smartphone models have begun to ship with fingerprint sensors and many more are expected to follow.
