Bengaluru’s KIA will be first fully Aadhaar-enabled airport in India

Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) is set to become the first Aadhaar-enabled airport in India by 2018, according to a report by The Economic Times.

Following a two-month pilot project in February, Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) has given the greenlight to make KIA fully compliant with Aadhaaar-enabled entry and biometric boarding system.

KIA is expected to be completely Aadhar enabled by December 2018, which is a part of the airport’s initiative to become a Smart Airport.

Passengers will be verified in less than five seconds at every checkpoint throughout the airport process, right up to the boarding gate.

As a result, the process should reduce the entire screening process to 10 minutes compared to the average 25 minutes it takes under the existing system.

The Aadhaar-enabled system will improve security, speed up clearance and alleviate delays at the airport to help more passengers enter through the same gate, and eliminate the need for passengers to show a paper ticket or boarding pass and ID at multiple checkpoints.

Passengers boarding international airline flights will be able to access the new system by October 4, 2018, with the project being completed by December 31, 2018.

The new system will provide several benefits for passengers at KIA, including eliminating the need to show paper ticket/boarding pass & ID at multiple checkpoints, creating an integrated travel document and identity document, providing seamless access across all checkpoints at the airport, reducing waiting time will be reduced.

In addition, the system will benefit security agencies and airport operators through creating time-stamped logs for each passenger for business insight, ensuring business intelligence or forensic analysis, achieving more throughput and reducing resources/increasing resource efficiency in the long run, generating passenger profiles as needed in the future for improved operational efficiency, and providing sustainable innovation edge.

Finally, there are several benefits for airlines including seamless and enhanced security checks; improving punctuality and OTP; increased savings due to predictability and availability of real-time business intelligence for better intervention; and business intelligence and availability of zone-wise passenger location per flight for airport entry, check-in, bag drop, boarding gate.
