VIX Verify develops biometric mobile ID app for ASB Bank

Following a pilot program in Auckland and Christchurch, New Zealand bank ASB has rolled out its new biometrics-based mobile ID app for all clients. The app, which was developed by identification verification solution provider VIX Verify, allows new customers to remotely verify their identity by comparing a selfie with a photo of their eligible drivers’ licence or passport.

The digital process allows eligible new customers to open an ASB bank account from anywhere in New Zealand in approximately 15 minutes, and start transacting the same day. The ASB ID app is available to customers within New Zealand who have joined online, have eligible photo ID and a supported mobile phone. Customers can download the ASB ID app for Apple or Android.

Claire McKinnon, ASB acting executive general manager retail, says customer and staff feedback from the pilot program was very positive, and highlighted the app’s ease of use. “During our pilot, there were a lot of comments about how convenient the ASB ID app was for people wanting to join without the need to visit a branch. Providing more choices about where and when our customers can join ASB by using this biometric technology has been an exciting innovation.”

Ross Hughson of VIX Verify New Zealand added that he enjoyed working with ASB on the innovative biometric solution. “We know biometrics can improve the customer experience, while also making it more efficient and safer for everyone.”

In the midst of the booming biometrics industry, digital identity verification stands out as an area which has gone through a rapid transformation from a theoretical capability to an increasingly common service.
