Hardware maker AOPEN announces Digital Engines for edge facial recognition

Global technology company AOPEN has announced a new line of AI-enabled Digital Engines for edge visual computing, which the company says are suited to applications including advanced facial recognition and industrial control, and are optimized for rapid and seamless deployment.

The AOPEN DEV Series consists of three new products built on machine learning processors from NVIDIA and Intel to power AI applications for smart retail and manufacturing through algorithm testing with hardware performance benchmarks, according to the announcement.

“This next generation of AOPEN is focused squarely on the solutions we are developing with partners,” says AOPEN America General Manager Aaron Pompey. “To power these solutions, AOPEN is expanding its product portfolio with high-performance Digital Engines for future-state industrial applications, including machine vision and AIoT.”

The DEV5400 is designed to perform visual computing tasks on a 24/7 basis, with an Intel Movidius AI accelerator for rapid and accurate data processing from high frame-rate feeds. The DEV7610 is a solution for high-performance 3D visual computing powered by an NVIDIA Graphics card to perform AI tasks such as facial recognition at the edge, and is well suited to retail analytics applications, AOPEN says. The DEV8430 high-performance workstation for powerful desktop applications or demanding edge computing tasks. It is expected to be released soon, with support for multiple HD cameras and simultaneously running high-level tasks.

Moving high-performance facial recognition to the network edge is the focus of an increasing number of products and partnerships, such as the recently announced camera processor from Ambarella and the development partnership of Etron and Kneron.
