Idex Biometrics granted UK patent for on-card enrollment

The UK Intellectual Property Office has awarded Norwegian fingerprint software and authentication company Idex Biometrics with a patent for on-card remote enrollment on biometric smart cards, the company announced.

The on-card enrollment patent is part of a set along with patents previously received for the same technology from the United States Patent and Trademark Office and IP Australia. Not only does the company have patents pending in other countries, but also a comprehensive portfolio of patents and applications related to fingerprint sensors and biometric technology.

“The UK is a strategically important market for biometric smart cards and recent high-profile bank pilots in the country substantiate that remote enrollment is crucial for mass deployment,” said Stan Swearingen, CEO of Idex Biometrics. “Our unconnected on-card enrollment solution provides the ability to enroll a fingerprint in a simple, secure and convenient way. We are confident that it is becoming the industry standard.”

A demonstration of IDEX’s remote enrollment solution is available here.

In July, Idex Biometrics passed key requirements for compliance, security and biometrics performance by multiple global payment schemes.

This month, Idex Biometrics signed a global license agreement for on-card biometric enrollment IP with one of Asia’s top smart card manufacturers Chutian Dragon Co. The two have been working together for over a year on developing dual-interface biometric cards for various verticals. Idex also signed a patent license agreement with Idemia for the global use of Idex’s on-card remote fingerprint enrollment solutions.
