Workforce management for Bangladesh Garment Exporters Association member factories

The Bangladesh Garment Exporters Association wants member factories to create a biometric database of workers details in the next three months.

Reported in just-style.com, the association will begin with factories in Ashulia, and plans to gradually extend the scheme from there. Databases will be prepared in partnership with TigerIT and Systech Digital and will be based on fingerprint biometrics.

According to the report, the Bangladeshi labor and employment minister Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju applauded the initiative, suggesting it could help identify workers in case of an emergency.

Raju’s comments come two months after a garment factory – Rana Plaza — in Bangladesh collapsed. The collapse – considered to be the deadliest accidental structural failure in modern human history —  killed more than 1,000 workers and incited chaos as people came to the factory wondering if relatives had made it out, were killed in the collapse or were stuck inside the debris still alive.

“The government could not calculate the exact number of workers who were missing after the Tazreen fire and Rana Plaza collapse due to the absence of a central database,” Raju said in the report. “Now, we would be able to, with just one click.”

Reported previously, TigerIT Bangladesh was recently selected to provide an automated fingerprint identification system for the Department of Home and Civil Registration and Census and the Department of Immigration in Bhutan.
