Lumidigm Inc. to deploy fingerprint sensors into CAIXA ATMs
Lumidigm Inc., a biometric company dedicated to enabling convenient, secure, and reliable identification and verification, is providing fingerprint sensors to CAIXA, Brazil’s second largest bank, for its ATMs.
Lumidigm is also partnering with ATM provider Diebold Incorporated and Griaule, a Brazilian-based software provider, to complete this project.
The “Bolsa Familia Program” served as the general catalyst for the implementation of fingerprint biometrics as a replacement of pin numbers at CAIXA ATMs. The program provides payment to families with below-average incomes for their children’s education.
Most bank customers under the program do not have bank accounts and only use ATMs once a month. Hence, it was a common scenario that many of the users would forget their PIN numbers and bank managers would often spends too much time in assisting the customers for renewing or changing their ATM pins.
CAIXA has currently 14,000 ATMs and has more than 58 million registered customers, which makes it troublesome for them to facilitate customers for PIN changes.
“Our fingerprint sensors are reliable and intuitive, perfect for unattended applications such as ATM access,” says Lumidigm Vice President of Transaction Systems Bill Spence. “CAIXA customers simply insert their card and touch the fingerprint reader to conveniently withdraw their funds from the ATM and be on their way. No PIN to remember, no training required. It’s that simple.”
Lumidigm’s fingerprint sensors incorporates multi-spectral imaging technology which enables it to read fingerprints both on and below the skin. This innovation leverages better and more secured biometric data and performance, which also benefits both the bank and its customers.
Considering the benefits of fingerprint technology, Latin America is constantly and rapidly embracing its innovation as the preferred mode of ATM access.
Lumidigm also announced that Itautec, an IT technology firm, is currently deploying the 12,000 Lumidigm fingerprint readers into CAIXA ATMs. Lumidigm also provides fingerprint sensors in banks in South Africa and India.
Do you also think that using fingerprints at ATMs is more efficient and secure than using PIN numbers?
