Oberthur Technologies has announced that it has joined the FIDO Alliance and has been appointed to the group’s Board of Directors.

“Oberthur Technologies is an outstanding addition to the FIDO Alliance board and underscores the quality of our global ecosystem,” Michael Barrett, FIDO Alliance presidents said. “We welcome Oberthur Technologies to our ranks for the renowned authority in secure smart card transactions and for their commitment to achieve better authentication with open standards that are simultaneously more secure, more private and easier to use than today’s password and PIN-based schemes.”

Reported previously, FIDO specifications will support a full range of technologies, including biometrics, as well as existing authentication solutions and communications standards such as TPM, USB security tokens, smart cards, NFC and others.

According to a recent research report, Oberthur, GemaltoMorpho and Giesecke & Devrient are currently dominating the ePassport market.

Earlier this month, the company announced it has now provided over 8 million ePassports to the Philippines, as well as its own dedicated end-to-end system.

The FIDO Alliance is growing rapidly and often adds new members. Recent additions include MasterCard and Blackberry, among others.
