Meizu, MediaTek developing facial recognition for smartphones

 

Meizu revealed via Twitter that that it is currently developing facial recognition technology for smartphones, according to a report by Gizmochina.

Ard Boudeling, head of global marketing at Meizu, recently tweeted that the company is working with MediaTek “to create the best facial recognition technology on smartphones,” which they “hope to show you in 2018.”

The companies have previously partnered on Meizu’s Pro 7 Plus, which is the only phone in the market powered by MediaTek Helio X30 smartphone chipsets..

With Apple’s introduction of facial recognition technology in the iPhone X, several more smartphone manufacturers are expected to release smartphones with similar authentication features in the coming months.

Although Boudeling did not mention the exact quarter of 2018 the phone will be released, it is expected that the facial recognition technology will be appear in a flagship device such as Meizu Pro 8.

Earlier this year, Meizu released Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus smartphones, which both feature dual displays in a unique design.

The smartphone manufacturer also released its first Snapdragon-powered smartphone, the M6 Note, this year.
