China develops open-source platform for AI development
China has developed an open-source artificial intelligence platform as part of its plan to become a world leader in the technology by 2030, the country’s science and technology minister said, according to the Business Standard.
“Open-source platforms are needed because AI can play a bigger role in development and make it easier for entrepreneurs to have access to resources,” Wan Gang said at a press conference.
The intention is that by making AI available on open-source platforms, the field will rapidly expand, and enable a new generation of technologies, Gang said. He also said that the national plan involves multiple ministries to apply it across different fields, the Standard reports.
Gang also highlighted national achievements in AI, including facial recognition at airports and train stations, and said that new regulations would be required as the technology develops.
China also launched an initiative last year to pour investment into advances in AI, and announced the development of a $2.1 billion AI research campus.
