AUO launches full-screen in-display fingerprint scanning panel for smartphones

AU Optronics (AUO) has launched a full-screen optical in-line biometric fingerprint scanning LPTS panel for smartphones, which it says is the world’s first.

The six-inch AUO Full HD+ 1080×2160 in-line touch LTPS panel has an optical sensor embedded in the liquid crystal display, which is also equipped with AHVA display technology. The display has 403 pixel-per-inch high-resolution image quality, and the full-screen fingerprint scanner has 403 PPI sensor resolution and a fast response time of 30 ms for an accurate and smooth biometric experience, according to a Google translation of the announcement.

Patent filings from Samsung and Apple have hinted at the possibility of full-screen fingerprint scanners, though in-display sensors are still yet to reach smartphones in the middle price range.
