Idemia’s facial biometric liveness detection technology declared iBeta compliant

Idemia’s biometric liveness detection receives iBeta certification

Idemia’s biometric liveness detection technology for identity fraud prevention and remote onboarding has been declared iBeta Level 1 and Level 2 compliant, following successful evaluation in third-party testing for Presentation Attack Detection (PAD), the company announced.

“At Idemia, we pride ourselves in our ability to create cutting-edge biometric solutions capable of streamlining a user’s digital journey and combatting fraud,” said Muzaffar Khokhar, Executive Vice President, Digital Business Unit, Idemia. “This independent accreditation proves our expertise, and will enable us to provide a more complete portfolio of onboarding and anti-fraud solutions for our clients across the globe.”

The technology is deemed compliant in accordance with the ISO/IEC 30107-3 standards and was finalized in December 2019.

The solution was tested in a simulated environment where a user had to enroll in the biometric authentication system. Level 1 testing involved genuine users who accepted to their photos and videos being used to spoof the system, while Level 2 testing involved silicone, latex and plastic masks. Presentation attacks could not penetrate the system, Idemia obtaining an attack presentation classification error rate (APCER) of 0 percent.

Liveness detection technology is included in Idemia’s SmartBio and WebBioServer SDKs to provide multi-channel identity verification solutions for customers via Android and iOS mobile apps, or web browsers. These tools help service providers, such as banks and mobile operators, deliver a remote, digital onboarding journey for their customers, complemented by widespread broadband coverage and high customer adoption of biometric-enabled mobile devices.

Remote onboarding opens the door for fraudsters to leverage a presentation attack such as a fake image or video of a legitimate customer, fake silicon or gelatin masks and fake fingerprints to open an account.

Presentation attack detection helps service providers reduce fraud impact, safeguard digital onboarding processes, comply with anti-money laundering (AML) and with counter-terrorism financing (CTF) regulations.

Idemia is one of two companies worldwide to have passed testing for Level 2 Liveness Detection. FaceTec’s ZoOm 3D Face Authentication passed the Level-2 certification test last February.

iBeta is the only NIST NVLAP accredited biometrics testing lab (NVLAP testing Lab Code 200962-0). Its quality management system and biometrics test procedures are independently audited by the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program in a comprehensive technical evaluation in accordance with the recognized International Standard ISO/IEC 17025:2017.

Last month, Idemia executive VP Philippe Barreau was elected Chairman of the Board of the Secure Identity Alliance.
