Fingerprint Cards collaborating on biometric payment cards for India with M-Tech

Fingerprint Cards collaborating on biometric payment cards for India with M-Tech

Fingerprint Cards and leading Indian smartcard manufacturer M-Tech are collaborating on the launch of contactless biometric payment cards for the Indian market, according to a company announcement.

The cards will feature FPC’s T-Shape module, part of the FPC1300 series, which the company says has very low power consumption and is tailored for integration with payment cards using standard automated manufacturing processes.

“We are pleased to collaborate with M-Tech, being a local card manufacturer and a leading payment innovator in India. This is an important collaboration to bring consumers in India a more secure, safe and easy payment experience,” says Fingerprint Cards SVP for Business Line Payments & Access Michel Roig.

The use of contactless and digital payments is rapidly increasing in India, according to the announcement, as customers show a preference for touch-free payment processes. Adding biometrics to payment cards can provide the security needed to remove the payment maximum of Rs 2,000 (US$27).

“We selected the biometric solution from Fingerprints since they have the leading technology in the market, with proven biometric performance and the lowest power consumption, which is of the highest importance for contactless biometric cards. Introducing biometric payment cards will offer great benefits for both banks, merchants and consumers as contactless payments in India is growing fast,” says V. M. Gandhi, CEO at M-Tech.

The second-generation T-Shape sensor module, along with FPC’s biometric software platform, were announced this week to have passed testing for China UnionPay’s specifications for fingerprint-enabled cards.
