Digitimes Research has published a new research report that reveals that fingerprint recognition sensors accounted for 96 percent of all biometric sensor product shipments in 2016.

The report forecasts that as more new sensor technologies begin entering the market, biometric sensor product shipments are expected to achieve a CAGR of 31.2 percent from 2017-2020.

Biometric sensor technologies are mainly grouped into two major categories: the static type (fingerprint, iris, face, palm vein recognition) and the dynamic type (voiceprint, heartbeat and gait recognition).

According to the report, in 2016 most biometric sensor products were being adopted in consumer electronics devices such as smartphones, followed by financial applications and surveillance systems.
