A group of companies from several sectors have come together to launch the Better Identity Coalition, which will seek to develop consensus and cross-sector policy initiatives to promote the adoption of effective identity verification and authentication in the U.S., according to an announcement.

The coalition is an initiative of the non-profit Center for Cybersecurity Policy & Law. Founding members of the coalition include Aetna, Bank of America, IDEMIA, JPMorgan Chase, Kabbage, Mastercard, Onfido, PNC Bank, Symantec, US Bank, and Visa.

“Recent breaches have made clear that many of the legacy systems we depend on for identity verification and authentication are vulnerable and outdated — inhibiting digital commerce and increasing risk for consumers and businesses alike,” said Jeremy Grant, coordinator of the Better Identity Coalition and former head of the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace (NSTIC). “As government contemplates new policies to improve the quality of digital identity in the United States, the Better Identity Coalition is bringing together leading companies to help policymakers develop innovative ideas that improve security, privacy, and convenience for all Americans.”

The Better Identity Coalition’s first steps will be to engage governments in identifying timely and effective areas for its input, outlining the challenges associated with “first-generation” verification and authentication tools, identifying regulatory, policy, and technical barriers to improving these tools, and developing new policies and initiatives to support the delivery of next-generation identity solutions for better security, privacy, and customer experience.
