Technavio releases gesture recognition market research

The growth of the consumer electronics market is driving the gesture recognition market, according to a new report by Technavio. The report, “Global Gesture Recognition Market for Consumer Electronic Devices 2018-2022,” offers predictions for the market, and identifies its key drivers and restraints.

An increase in the number of vendors is identified as a key market trend in the report, which updates Technavio’s previous research on the subject.

Technavio defines gesture recognition as “a process of understanding human gestures and movements using computer algorithms. The technology applies human gestures, such as movement of hand, fingers, arms, head or an entire body, as an input mechanism to perform desired actions in a system. It replaces the old-fashioned input mechanisms wherein keyboards, mouse, remote controls, and various other control devices are used to perform remote functions.” It says that in combination with related technologies, such as voice recognition, facial recognition, and eye-tracking, gesture recognition could change the way people interact with machines.

The report examines key regions in the market, including the Americas, EMEA, and APAC, and topics such as smart glasses for augmented reality, virtual reality cardboard, virtual reality in gaming, and the smart kitchen.

Researchers at Georgia Tech recently developed a device to allow people to trace numbers and letter onto a computer screen with hand gestures.
