IDEX working with Visionox to develop fingerprint sensors with integrated displays

IDEX Biometrics announced today that it is collaborating with Chinese OLED display manufacturer Visionox to explore development of the next-generation of IDEX’s off-chip biometric sensors for smart cards using Visionox’s flexible LTPS TFT backplane technology.

According to a company statement, the goal of the collaboration is to enable cost-effective, feature-rich smart card systems employing both display and biometric technologies.

“The IDEX team has extensive experience in merging capacitive sensing and display technologies,” explains IDEX Biometrics CEO Stan Swearingen. “Integrated displays represent the next generation of fingerprint sensors in cards. By combining the fingerprint sensor with a display, the user experience and security can be significantly enhanced. The display can be used for a range of features including dynamic CVV to address card-not-present fraud, user-specific information such as account balance, or to provide feedback when enrolling the fingerprint.”

“The technology will also be applicable to other verticals such as Mobile or IoT,” Swearingen added.

According to the company’s third quarter report, IDEX has made significant progress towards commercializing its biometric smart card products.
