Nok Nok Labs announces biometric FIDO-certified IoT SDK for strong authentication

Nok Nok Labs has introduced Nok Nok IoT SDK, a multi-factor FIDO-based strong authentication solution for standalone and cloud-connected IoT devices with support for all biometric modalities, using the Nok Nok S3 Authentication Suite.

“Today, many devices contain default passwords that are identical across product lines, and for authenticating users to devices — this is neither secure nor convenient. And, we are just now witnessing the first regulations banning such shared default passwords and promoting the use of individual default passwords or multi-factor authentication,” said Dr. Rolf Lindemann Vice President, Products, Nok Nok Labs in a prepared statement. “As an inventor of FIDO specifications, Nok Nok addresses the need for standards-based authentication solutions, and we can bring this expertise to a new market and avoid repeating the weak username and password authentication practices of the past.”

According to IDC numbers, by 2025 the number of connected IoT devices will reach 41.6 billion, and they will generate 79.4 zettabytes (ZB) of data containing sensitive information about employee work schedules, car locations or transactions generated through smart home speakers. IoT devices collect high data volumes and can be easily compromised if traditional username-password authentication methodologies are still used.

Nok Nok IoT SDK helps companies boost user-to-device authentication security through passwordless customer authentication for mobile applications, mobile web, desktop web and smart watches.

The new solution runs on existing microcontroller units (MCUs), and is compliant with industry regulations and global standards of not including default passwords. The software assists with fast implementation of MFA, which is more secure than passwords, delivers two-factor authentication and supports all biometric modalities, Nok Nok Labs says.

“As organizations work toward adopting IoT-based solutions to combat the growing wave of breaches in the space, the sheer number of devices that have been introduced to the market has prevented them from keeping up,” said Thad Peterson, Senior Analyst, Aite Group in a statement. “Building a standard inside the device — like the Nok Nok IoT SDK — creates potential for industries like healthcare and manufacturing to secure increasingly remote work environments.”

Furthermore, with the prevalence of IoT devices, Nok Nok’s authentication solution decreases cost and is easily integrated for various uses cases. Nok Nok IoT SDK combined with the Nok Nok S3 platform enables companies to roll out for authentication a single developer API, globally and FIDO-certified.

Last month, Nok Nok Labs announced a partnership with BBVA to help the multinational financial services company deliver stronger biometric security and authentication for mobile banking services and enhance user experience.
