Smartmatic wins Albania biometric voter registration contract with lone bid
Smartmatic will implement biometric identification technology in Albania’s April elections this year via a US$20 million contract with the Central Election Commission, reports Exit News.
The company’s bid was the only one submitted to the Commission. The approval of a hardware purchase to support the establishment of a biometric voter registration system was granted late last year.
In September, the company was chosen by Uganda’s government to provide biometric voter verification equipment in the country’s 2021 election in a bid of $22.4 million.
Smartmatic’s election software includes voter management, identity management, e-counting and poll worker support, among other features. The company has managed election systems on 5 continents, and tabulated 5 billion votes with zero security breaches, according to Smartmatic’s website.
Though accused by Trump supporters for rigging the U.S. 2020 General Election, Smartmatic is currently seeking $2.7 billion in damages from television channel Fox News over the claims.
Albania’s next election is scheduled for April 25.
