Denmark awards $4.4M contract for devt of digital ID wallet
 

Digital ID services firm Nine has won a contract from the Danish Agency for Digital Government to develop a digital ID wallet for the country, extending its many years of collaboration with the agency.

According to an announcement from Trifork, a Nine parent company, the contract was awarded through SKI framework agreement 02.14, category 1, with the initial phase of the project estimated at 29 million Danish Krone (US$4.4 million).

Nine has worked with the agency in the past, namely on the next generation digital post and rights portal projects.

The development of the wallet is due to start on April 25 and is expected to go live by the first quarters of 2026, the company says. After that, Nine will offer continued support in the following two years.

Authorities have explained that it will be a user-controlled wallet that will enable citizens and other users to get a digital proof of age and a digital ID credential, with the ability to share just the fraction of information that is exactly required for each transaction.

The announcement notes that the Danish digital ID wallet will be developed in consonance with the EU’s eIDAS2 regulation, with a wide array of digital credentials to be added to it over time. It will also be compatible with digital ID wallets from other EU member states.

“We are proud to be entrusted with developing Denmark’s Digital Identity Wallet. It is an exciting and meaningful task where security, user-friendliness, and future EU compatibility are at the core,” Nine CEO, Jacob Strange, said.

Danish officials say they also plan to use the wallet to issue digital credentials in the future.

Denmark completed its phase into a new digital ID system (MitID) at the end of 2023.
