New York launches Idemia-backed mDL for verification at TSA checkpoints

Idemia Public Security North America, the company’s government services arm, has launched a digital ID app for the New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), which will allow New York residents to assert their identity securely from their mobile phone at Transportation Security Authority (TSA) checkpoints.

According to a release from New York Governor Kathy Huchol, who announced the DMV mobile drivers license (mDL) initiative, New York Mobile ID is “a highly secure digital version of a state-issued driver license, learner permit or ID on a smartphone.” She says the optional ID means New Yorkers will be able to quickly display their IDs and enjoy enhanced security.

“Everything is on your cell phone these days, and now, your ID can be too,” says DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder. “Rather than handing over your physical ID with lots of personal information, the Mobile ID gives you greater control over what personal data you share. Digital credentials are the future of identity verification, and New York is proud to be among the States leading this innovation in partnership with the TSA.”

The mDL can be used in person or online for verification by various government agencies, businesses, and organizations, and is designed to conform to the International Organization for Standardization standard for the mobile driving license (ISO 18013-5).

Donnie Scott, CEO of Idemia Public Security North America, says that “throughout the development and launch of New York’s Mobile ID, leaders in the State challenged us to do more and make important improvements to our mID offering. Together, we are demonstrating our collective commitment to expanding the use of mobile ID while implementing technologies that are convenient, secure, and equally accessible to all citizens.”

Features of the mobile digital credential include push-based updates and significant user experience improvements in screen reader compatibility, adjustable text and contrast and voice command.

New York residents can use the app immediately to verify their identities with their mobile phones at TSA checkpoints at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and LaGuardia Airport (LGA), plus 27 other participating airports around the country equipped with credential authentication technology (CAT) units.

Mobile ID is available for free download to all state residents holding a valid state-issued driver license, learner permit or non-driver ID. The app is available on both Google Play and the Apple App Store.
